- Palanok Castle in Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region
Palanok Castle is located on the western outskirts of Mukachevo, on top of an extinct volcano. The fortress itself is located on a mountain, while the city is located on a plain. It is believed that the origin of the name of the city is connected with the mountain. According to legend, this mountain was created by people with their own hands, literally "poured" the mountain, which cost them great torment, hence the name "Mukachevo".
From a distance, it looks like a solid object, but in fact it consists of a cascade of terraces. Mukachevo Castle was never stormed, and the most heroic defense in its history was headed by a woman - Transylvanian Princess Ilona Zrini held the castle, which was besieged by the Austrian army for three years. A monument to the princess and her ten-year-old son Ferenc II Rakoczi, who later led a new anti-Habsburg uprising in adulthood, has been erected on one of the bastions. And in the Upper Court, there is a monument to the Lithuanian-Russian prince Fedor Koryatovych, who ruled the region at the end of the XIV century.
Today Palanok castle is very convenient and attractive for tourism. A very good road leads to it, which is not difficult to climb even for an elderly tourist. In the fortress itself, there are lots of interesting and exciting.
