Overview

Ivano-Frankivsk is a city with a centuries-old history, ancient traditions, extraordinary artistic life and dynamic economy. The city was founded in the middle of the XVII century. In 1662 it received the Magdeburg Right, which provided the town community with the legal right of local government. Then it was called Stanislaviv, and only in 1962 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary it was renamed to Ivano-Frankivsk in honor of the famous Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko.

Ivano-Frankivsk is the heart of Prykarpattia. Here the traditions of Hutsul, Boykos, Opillia and Pokuttya regions are successfully combined. The centuries of Polish and Austrian occupation affected the architecture, language, mentality and habits of the citizens. Jews, Armenians, and Germans who were living here also had an essential influence. That is the reason why Ivano-Frankivsk not only looks like a provincial European town, but also the people here think and act in a European way.
